Using WriteExpress Easy Letters in Grade 12 Business English
St. Robert Catholic High School
Thornhill, Ontario, Canada
Dear Mr. Stevens:
I've recently used WriteExpress in my Grade 12 Business English class and have found the student skills have improved significantly. Business English attracts students whose writing and reading abilities are lacking. Students usually cannot cope with the demands of English literature courses and, as a result, are seeking their 'last' English credit prior to graduating from high school. They arrive usually having experienced failure and their motivation is at an all-time low. I endorse the pragmatic approach of WriteExpress. It is necessary for students who have experienced disappointment in both reading and writing skills.
The results have been remarkable, to say the least! Self-esteem improves as students begin to complete letters, consequently, the motivational aspect of the lesson is self-perpetuating. They can't wait to get to the computer lab to do their letters!
While securing the computer lab for two days a week and the computers in the library one day a week, was not easy feat, I persevered because of the positive effect it was having on the morale of the students and their accomplishment in writing skill.
WriteExpress is so comprehensive. Topics covered are too numerous to mention. It is interesting and mirrors real-life situations.
Writing letters is a task often viewed with great apprehension. WriteExpress takes away the apprehension and gives the student confidence as it guides, step by step, through to letter completion.
As a teacher, I find it allows the students to think creatively. The sample letters serve as a 'springboard' which unleashes their own thoughts while providing a framework for structure of content.
Not only has their writing skill improved, but, best of all, they enjoy it!
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Josey Gadzala
